The Canteen Rangatahi Development Grant profoundly impacted the life of rangatahi member Melanie. Last year, facing a cancer diagnosis, Melanie was struggling to manage both full-time employment and studies, and in August 2023, took an unavoidable break from work due to her altered brain functioning and cancer treatment.
Fortunately, thanks to the Rangatahi Development Grant, Melanie resumed her studies in 2024. These resources not only eased her fatigue, but also made their academic journey more manageable. Melanie said:
“The Canteen Rangatahi Development Grant significantly impacted my life. Last year, upon receiving a cancer diagnosis, I juggled full-time employment and studies until August 2023 when I had to take a break from both for treatment. Luckily, I got the chance to go back to studying this year thanks to the grant.
"Adjusting to studying with my altered brain function proved challenging, and I honestly believe I wouldn't have been able to continue without the invaluable resources provided by Canteen.
"These resources have not only made studying more manageable but also eased fatigue for me. Without the Canteen Rangatahi Development Grant support, I wouldn't have been able to afford these essential supplies, which I am forever grateful for.”
The $1000 maximum grant is open to all rangatahi supported by Canteen, with those experiencing financial hardship being prioritised.
Canteen's commitment to rangatahi leadership and development is evident through initiatives like the Rangatahi Development Grant, which aims to support rangatahi like Melanie to overcome challenges and thrive in their educational pursuits.
