Leadership Festival 2024

22 Aug 2024

Canteen’s Leadership Festival 2024 was a dynamic three-day event that united over 70 rangatahi aged 16-25 who have been touched by cancer. Held in Sydney, the festival brought together Canteen leaders from across Aotearoa and Australia for a weekend brimming with inspiration, empowerment, and camaraderie.

Canteen has a proud history of rangatahi leadership. Our rangatahi development aims to provide opportunities to develop skills and connections that will benefit their long-term future while also contributing to the direction of the organisation.

The festival kicked off with a heartfelt Welcome to Country ceremony, followed by a Karakia led by Rangatahi Leader John, and a shared waiata. The opening was marked by inspiring addresses from Canteen Australia CEO Peter Orchard and Canteen Aotearoa CEO Nick Laing.

Throughout the festival, rangatahi engaged in a variety of workshops designed to foster connection, creativity, and skill-building. They explored allyship and reconciliation with the Young Adult Reconciliation Network, delved into facilitation with Mark Collard from Playmeo, and tackled awareness leadership with Wayne and Gabrielle Enright. They also gained insights on raw resilience from Rebecca Rourke and had the chance to pitch their projects and collaborate in breakout groups.

The event was not just about learning—it was also about having fun. From a formal two-course dinner with live music to a lively pizza, pyjama, and karaoke party, the festival offered plenty of opportunities for relaxation and enjoyment, providing a welcome break from the challenges of cancer.

Leadership Festival 2024 highlighted the value of creating spaces for rangatahi to reconnect, innovate, and advocate for cancer awareness while shaping the future of Canteen.

Rangatahi Leader Tommy had the following to say:

"I found that listening to other leaders' stories provides valuable insights into their journeys and perspectives. Canteen offers a unique space where sharing experiences about cancer is encouraged and fosters significant learning and connection.

"At Canteen, the projects are invaluable for personal development, offering skills that benefit you in all areas of life. While fundraising is key, use this opportunity to learn new practical and personal skills in a supportive environment."

Reflecting on the experience, Canteen Aotearoa CEO Nick Laing remarked, "It was inspiring to be among such remarkable rangatahi from both sides of the Tasman. Our future is certainly in great hands."

As the festival wrapped up, farewells were bittersweet, filled with the excitement of new friendships and the anticipation of future gatherings. The weekend left everyone with a treasure trove of memories, learning, laughter, and a renewed sense of leadership.
