Canteen partnered with Waipuna, an organisation that offers adventure therapy services, to run a six-week surf series. This series provides rangatahi impacted by cancer with a chance to learn to surf, connect with peers, and take a well-deserved break from cancer.
The series was designed to support rangatahi navigating the challenges of being impacted by cancer, by offering them a unique opportunity to enjoy time together and learn resilience. Led by experienced surf instructors, participants gained new skills, built confidence, and formed lasting connections with others who share similar experiences.
Meg, Counsollor at Waipuna, said:
"One of the big things we do is to offer experiences, have fun, and make connections in the wider community of cancer. It's all about the stuff happening behind the scenes - getting hit by waves and getting back up again, and making connections between the Canteen members. They have genuine real-life experiences together that form bonds and connections. You can see the smiles on their faces throughout the entire action."
This programme brought together the therapeutic benefits of outdoor adventure with the power of community, creating a space where rangatahi could bond, share their stories, and feel supported in a way that was both fun and empowering.
Connor, rangatahi member, said:
"I've had some lovely surfing experiences. It's lovely to get out there and see lots of smiles on the waves. Everyone comes way from these events smiling."
Tommy, rangatahi member, said:
"It's been a bit of a workout, but great to be out with a new group of people, learn a new skill, and do something fun. Everyone is getting together and cheering each other on. Waipuna has cultivated an environment where it's really good to do this."
