This April, a group of rangatahi impacted by cancer came together on the shores of Lake Brunner for the annual Te Haerenga i Te Waipounamu adventure therapy programme.

Delivered in partnership with Waipuna, the four-day canoe journey provided a unique opportunity for rangatahi to step away from the challenges of everyday life, connect with nature, and build meaningful relationships with others who understand the impact of cancer.

Designed for rangatahi aged 16+, the programme combines outdoor adventure with therapeutic support, helping participants develop confidence, resilience and a stronger sense of self in a safe and supportive environment.

Adventure Therapy is an evidence-informed approach that uses nature, shared experiences and purposeful challenges to support emotional wellbeing. Research has shown it can strengthen resilience, improve self-confidence, foster social connection and provide a positive outlet for managing stress and anxiety. Throughout the journey, rangatahi were encouraged to challenge themselves, reflect on their experiences and support one another as they paddled together across Lake Brunner.

The programme brought together a small group of rangatahi, each with their own unique experience of cancer. Expert facilitators from both Canteen Aotearoa and Waipuna guided the journey, with Canteen providing psychosocial support and peer connection, while Waipuna led outdoor instruction and ensured participants could safely embrace each challenge along the way.

While the canoe journey itself was a highlight, it was the connections formed that left the biggest impact. Sharing stories, encouraging one another through challenges and spending time together in nature helped create a strong sense of belonging that many participants described as one of the most valuable parts of the experience.

Programmes like Te Haerenga i Te Waipounamu continue to demonstrate the powerful role adventure therapy can play in supporting rangatahi impacted by cancer. By combining the healing qualities of the outdoors with professional therapeutic support and peer connection, Canteen is helping young people build confidence, strengthen resilience and discover they are not alone in their journey.

As Canteen continues to explore innovative ways to support the wellbeing of rangatahi, Te Haerenga i Te Waipounamu remains an important part of creating opportunities for growth and connection.
