Canteen supports rangatahi to gain social, development, and leadership skills using a range of different pathways and programmes.

Leadership
Programme

Canteen has a proud history of youth leadership, which continues to shape how we design and deliver our programmes and services. Our Local Leadership Teams bring together rangatahi who want to contribute their voices, grow their confidence, and help shape experiences for other young people in the Canteen community.

Any rangatahi using Canteen services aged 16 or over can apply to become a rangatahi leader.

Career
Conversations

A cancer diagnosis, whether your own or within the whānau, can disrupt your education or career development. Having a dedicated space to discuss your options with a career advisor can provide valuable support and guidance, helping you make informed decisions during this challenging time.

Member
Directors

Canteen is a rangatahi-led organisation, ensuring that young people have a voice at every level of decision-making. Our governance structure includes rangatahi representation on the Board of Directors, with Member Directors—young people who have been part of Canteen—helping to oversee the organisation’s operations. We actively support and empower rangatahi to take on these leadership roles, making sure their experiences and perspectives shape the direction of Canteen.

O'Grady Leadership Award

The O’Grady Leadership Award is given annually at the AGM to a rangatahi who has shown a commitment to being supportive of others or the organisation. The award is named after the O'Grady sisters who were active members of Canteen for many years including time in local leadership groups and on the board. This is an award for rangatahi, by rangatahi.
